About Front Mission

Front Mission is a series of strategy RPGs set on a near future Earth, where factions conduct war and keep the peace with a type of large, versatile mobile suit commonly known as a wanzer (pronounced vahn-zeur), a shortened form of wanderpanzer, or "walking tank".

As of this writing, ten Front Mission games have been released and one is currently in development; those that have been officially released outside of Japan are listed in italics:
  • Front Mission (SNES, 1995) - Later ported to the WonderSwan Color. Also released on the PlayStation as the enhanced port, Front Mission 1st; the Nintendo DS port of FM is based on this version.
  • Front Mission: Gun Hazard (SNES, 1996) - This game is more action-oriented than the others in the series, and features a different style of play. It was made available on the Japanese Wii Virtual Console service in May 2008.
  • Front Mission II (PS1, 1997)
  • Front Mission Alternative (PS1, 1997)
  • Front Mission 3 (PS1, 1999) - The first Front Mission to be released outside of Japan.
  • Front Mission 4 (PS2, 2003)
  • Front Mission 2089 and 2089-II (Mobile, 2005-2006) - A Nintendo DS port of these games, titled "Front Mission 2089: Border of Madness", was released in Japan in May 2008.
  • Front Mission Online (PS2 and Windows PC, 2005)
  • Front Mission 5: Scars of the War (PS2, 2005)
  • Front Mission Evolved (360, PS3, PC; TBA)
There is also a Front Mission manga currently running in Square Enix's Young GanGan magazine titled "Front Mission Dog Life & Dog Style".

The latest Front Mission title, Front Mission Evolved, is a third-person shooter and the first game in the series to be developed by a western studio. It was announced shortly before E3 2009, and its release date is currently unknown.
